Near Death Experiences

Posted February 20, 2012

It started out like any good powder day.  Fresh snow, good friends, strong legs. While the avalanche bulletin rated the risk as "considerable", things felt stable and the powder beckoned.  There were about 10 or so people in the circle I was skiing with that morning...everyone was talking about head…

Satisfaction

Posted December 12, 2011

My favourite Vancouver Island ski hill, Mt. Cain, opened for the season this Saturday (December 10th, 2011).  I swear that place is a bubble of happiness.  I am satisfied because:

a.  I helped get the upper tee-bar open by shovelling hard-packed snow onto bare patches Saturday morning (and was one…

Like the title says - 7 inches in the parking lot at Mt. Cain when I got there today for a site meeting at 10 am!

The view on the drive up.

First tracks in the parking lot!

Catching up

Posted September 13, 2011

Well, it's 4:19 am and I am wide awake.  Been that way since about 10 minutes to 2.  I have a lot on my mind, so what better way to try and get back to sleep than to "blog-dump" it!

We stopped at this nice pond after climbing the Bedwell trail.  Notice the very snazzy looking black back pack besi…

Bedwell-Cream Lake

Posted September 5, 2011

Just some photo's for now.  Went and did a quick overnight into Strathcona Park with Tree.  Hiked up Bedwell Trail to Big Bedwell Lake Saturday.  Camped for the night and then day tripped over to Cream Lake.  Headed back out Sunday early evening - home late.  Still tired!

Tree in the foreground…

rain at Cain

Posted August 2, 2011

Not to be confused with pain at Cain, an altogether less pleasant Cain experience.  I took my son up to Cain where we stayed in a borrowed cabin and generally checked things out.  There is still a lot of snow.  And bears - lots of bears...

enough to ski on still...not bad for July 30th!

Out fir…

STOKED!

Posted January 9, 2011

Wow - I'm still stoked.  I only skied three runs today, but I have to say I have probably  never been more satisfied after a day of skiing.  Run #1 - groomer from the top of Mount Cain to the bottom.  Run #2 - we headed into the East Bowl and watched a group ski the Dream Chute, then headed down …

Happy New Year!

First off, to my dedicated nine readers, my apologies for not warning you of my impending absence.  I had a trip to Mount Cain booked and after a rockin party Christmas Eve, I was in no shape to post anything coherent Christmas Day.

Tree and I headed up Boxing Day and were greeted b…

First turns of the season

Posted December 12, 2010

While not the most spectacular way to start the season, getting out and up the old Forbidden Plateau ski hill for a skin-up and some turns was a good way to spend the day. My apologies for the picture quality, all I had was my CrackBerry...sigh...

View from the top (well, 2/3rds at least...)

Dave …

First Winter Trip of 2010!!!!

Posted November 28, 2010

After last nights very successful first big gig for my band, "Those Guys from Tin Town", today was a day to head out to the back country.  After some pancakes with my son, his mom and grandma, I headed up to Forbidden Plateau with my friends Karin, Greg and Dave.  It was very nice, and there are abo…

Dreaming of snow...

Posted September 21, 2010

I dreamt of skiing the other night

It was epic.  There was powder.  I saw myself at the top of a steep run and dropped in.  The turns carved themselves through the standing waves of white surf as I flew to the bottom of the line…there were details.  I was in my AT gear…I remembered pulling my skins …
